Abstract

The Centre for Research and Innovation in Education (inED) is an R&D unit that aggregates 46 integrated researchers associated with three management institutions, the Schools of Education of the Porto (main management institution), Coimbra and Viana do Castelo Polytechnics. The unit is dedicated to advancing declarative, procedural, and situational knowledge within Education Sciences, in 3 thematic areas: Teacher Education and Professional Development; Special Education and Inclusive Pedagogy; Social Challenges, Culture and Education. The three areas assume that education is a central process in human life, both for individuals and societies, taking place from the earliest years and throughout the life cycle, in a variety of situations and contexts. In 2024-2029, the unit will pursue two main goals strongly aligned with the priorities of the 2030 agenda, especially the SDGs 3 (Good Health and well-being), 4 (Quality Education) and 10 (Reduced inequalities): 1. To research contemporary educational issues through the study of innovative and transformative approaches and their impact on the quality of educational contexts, professional development, and children’s/ students’ outcomes. 2. To promote research and intervention activities aimed to understand and improve the well-being of individuals, groups and organizations, and the sustainable transformation of social contexts, through a multidisciplinary educational approach. These objectives are transversal to the 3 areas, capitalizing on the combined expertise and multidisciplinary research from the three Schools of Education, and conducting an in-depth exploration of emerging trends in relevant areas for the education field. The expansion to three institutions has broadened the geographical scope and strengthened inED's capacity to perform as a dynamic research environment, enabling access to wider scientific communities and integration into additional national and international networks. inED reveals a strengthened capacity to promote a comprehensive and multifaceted understanding of education as a dynamic phenomenon and to contribute with substantial research results for our target groups to respond robustly and proactively to challenges, in line with stakeholder needs and national and international research trends, including topics as those related to Artificial Intelligence; STEAM; Sustainability, Diversity and Equity. For the advancement and application of knowledge, to promote top-level research, the unit’s strategy for the next years addresses the priorities: consolidate research conditions; foster professional and career development; reinforce internationalization; ensure research transparency, integrity, and ethics; increase dissemination, scientific and technological culture, and citizen science.
