Abstract

CICANT – Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture, and New Technologies was created more than 20 years ago with the main purpose of harnessing the R&I activities of the School of Communication, Arts and Information Technologies at Lusófona University. With the current activity plan for the period 2025-2029 we want to continue the consolidation of our past work and escalate ongoing initiatives and projects in view of further reinforcing the positioning of the unit and the relevance it has in ensuring the fulfilment of the research and innovation dimensions of the mission of all participating HEIs. In a context where media are increasingly varied and the implications of their use and pervasive presence in our society do not cease to expand, innovative R&D approaches and methods that intersect different disciplines and perspectives are ever more needed. Enabling research and innovation activities that integrate critical perspectives, theoretical grounding, experimentation, and knowledge exchange is essential. This contributes to addressing profound societal changes and increasing the relevance of interconnected disciplines like media, artistic expression, and emerging technologies. Our ambition for the period is to further affirm CICANT’s recognition as a distinguished Portuguese Unit that strongly contributes to research and innovation in the fields of media, society and literacies, media arts, technologies and related domains across the cultural and creative industries, within the European Research Area, National level and across all Portuguese speaking countries. To attain our ambition, we designed our activity plan across three complementary axes: Excellence; Internationalization and People. These 3 axes frame our core areas of intervention during the period and our objectives. Excellence stands for the relevance and impact we want to ensure for our research amid original forms of collaboration supported by strong ethical values and guidelines. Internationalization stands for the international dimension we want to have, from the design of new research endeavours to the attraction of talent or the scouting for new collaborative opportunities. People stands for the centrality our team and other stakeholders have in building the community CICANT is and that we want to continue to nurture, both via the reinforcement of the team and the consolidation of career models and quality assurance policies that increase the attractiveness and competitiveness of the unit. Between 2025 and 2029, CICANT will deepen its existing structure of Knowledge and Innovation Communities (ReLeCos) and labs while implementing a new regional organizational model that accommodates the unit’s growth and its interventions across different locations in the country. In this period, Unit will continue to strengthen its team and the excellence of its results building on the strong existing sense of community and the unique international collaborations in place.
