Abstract

PRAXIS explores the concept of action and the philosophical problems or challenges it involves. In particular, it aims to examine action across various dimensions, placing a special focus on the interplay between personal experience and the broader relational or social contexts where human action unfolds. To explore the personal and relational aspects of action, the Centre will organize into two working groups that integrate members from its two poles, at Univ. da Beira Interior and Univ. de Évora. The Ethics and Politics Working Group (EPWG) will concentrate on dimensions of action that are normally more explicit, delving into ethical and political action through both historical examinations and contemporary debates. It also aims to reflect on new patterns of action at the individual, social and political levels. Bringing together experts from normative ethics, applied ethics, contemporary political philosophy, political science, and the history of moral and political thought (especially ancient, medieval, and early modern), the EPWG aims to foster theoretical and practical approaches, distinct traditions (analytical and continental, including phenomenological approaches) as well as interdisciplinary collaboration across various domains. From these intersections, the EPWG will endeavor to analyze and address a series of pivotal questions centered around three key concepts: Power, Justice, and Care. The Phenomenology and Culture Working Group (PCWG) will focus on: 1) describing the personal experience of action, particularly its existential dimension; 2) investigating how this type of description reveals connections with various cultural forms; and 3) enhancing our comprehension of cultural dynamics and creation through phenomenological analysis. PCWG’s goal for 2025-29 is to consolidate, enrich, and expand its existing activities in the fields of Phenomenology (including phenomenological psychology and phenomenological-existential therapy), Philosophy of Culture, and the intersection of Phenomenology and Culture. Regarding this intersection, PCWG will explore the rich and nuanced contributions of phenomenological approaches to our understanding of life, as well as its cultural and social frameworks. By means of this exploration, the PCWG aims to consolidate PRAXIS’s position as a leading center in Phenomenology and Philosophy of Culture, while demonstrating the relevance of these fields to the great debates of our time. PRAXIS has a strong commitment to a comprehensive dissemination strategy, which includes international scientific publications in open access (including through PRAXIS’ virtual library, Lusosofia), outreach activities and multiple advanced training activities in connection with 4 doctoral programs.
