Abstract

The Technology, Restoration and Arts Enhancement Centre (TECHN&ART) is an R&D unit committed to developing technological, scientific, and artistic solutions for the preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage in low density territories and for the benefit of the communities. Six years after its foundation and considering its recent expansion, TECHN&ART is now able to aim higher in terms of objectives and strategy. Its 12 objectives will be achieved by: 1) consolidating its leading rolein the field of Conservation and Restoration, particularly by further exploring the role of creativity and the continued development of an innovative “Creative Conservation” methodology; 2) further exploring the emergent field of new media art preservation (notably regarding criptoart, multimedia artworks and electroacoustic music), under the scope of Creative Conservation; 3) continuing to invest in the study of natural biocides for sustainable heritage conservation, hand in hand with materials studies, with a view to finding solutions that favour the circular economy paradigm, while also complying to waste reuse and recycling principles; 4) hosting and financially supporting two permanent positions in Conservation and Restoration, and by doing so contribute to implementing the FCT Tenure programme within IPT; 5) developing a leading project aimed at assessing the state of respiratory health of restoration professionals, so as to identify risks and the most effective measures to minimize them; 6) expanding and consolidating TECHN&ART’s reach by establishing two Management Units in the Polytechnic Universities of Castelo Branco (IPCB) and Guarda (IPG); 7) creating a joint doctoral programme with IPCB and IPG; 8) developing work within the digitization and cataloguing of photographic collections in archives, to speed their migration from an analogue to a digital format as a priority preservation strategy; 9) fostering cinematographic proposals anchored in cultural heritage, emerging from criteria of urgency, opportunity or relevance of their retention and dissemination; 10) promoting critical discussion resorting to an Art-based research methodology, through the partnership with the Villa Portela Arts Centre (Leiria); 11) working within the KreativEU European University consortium in joint international project submissions, such as the ongoing HORIZON proposal dedicated to memory politics and (post-)authoritarianism in peripheral contexts; and 12) more broadly, deepening TECHN&ART’s links with memory studies and adopting a more critical stance within Heritage Studies. Overall, the recognition of TECHN&ART’s work is beginning to show. Thus, funding is a necessary condition for achieving TECHN&ART’s research goals and to remain relevant in a highly competitive and global scientific community.
