Abstract
The Smart Cities Research Center (Ci2) of the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (IPT) pursues applied research to address the inherent challenges of creating Smart and Sustainable Cities and Environments.
In its 2025-2029 strategic roadmap, Ci2 commits to advancing research in Intelligent and Pervasive Environments (IPE) and Sustainable Resources Management (SRM), tackling societal and environmental challenges through innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Under the IPE line, Ci2 focuses on advancing research across three critical fronts. First, in Communication Technologies, the center aims to explore advancements in 5G and 6G and Wi-Fi networks for improved network performance and connectivity. Second, in the field of Cyber-Physical Systems, the research plan covers sensing and perception, interaction technologies, and flexible electronics. This research includes AI/ML-based methods for multi-modal sensor data integration and deep learning solutions for human perception, such as affective states, focusing on privacy-preserving techniques. To complement this, research will be conducted on virtual/augmented reality to explore how immersive interfaces can enhance the user experience in human-robot interaction and printable technology for flexible wearable devices for clinical applications. Third, on Big Data and Analytics, research on edge computing and data management for smart cities aims to integrate robotic devices into network infrastructure and enhance scalability and context awareness, as well as to explore open technologies to avoid typical information silos from commercial solutions.
Under the SRM line, plans are structured around three areas. In Sustainable Environments and Energy Systems, the focus is on fuel cells and renewable energy. This involves research into producing green hydrogen through water electrolysis from renewable sources, optimizing hydrogen production, and integrating renewable energy into existing grids. Research on Smart Grids aims to design resilient architectures prioritizing local demand response and off-grid operation. It utilizes digital technologies to optimize energy management and foster a decentralized, sustainable energy ecosystem. Lastly, Domestic and Industrial Wastewater Management concentrates on enhancing wastewater treatment processes' efficiency and environmental sustainability, aligning with circular economy principles and resource valorization initiatives through nature-based solutions and real-time water quality monitoring.
In addition to its research plans, Ci2 prioritizes integrating new researchers into permanent positions and following open science initiatives to foster collaboration and innovation. Through its strategic roadmap for 2025-2029, Ci2 reaffirms its commitment to address open complex challenges and drive positive change for Smart Cities and Sustainable Environments, ultimately benefiting communities and ecosystems.
