Abstract

In a context marked by global challenges such as climate change, digital transition and population ageing urging the pursuit of a sustainable and inclusive way of life, CiTUA questions: How can we strategically plan the territories we inhabit and use, promoting their cohesion? Which public policies are most adequate? How can quality of decision be ensured? CiTUA is an R&D center dedicated to research and advanced training in Territory, Urbanism and Architecture. Our mission is to develop the knowledge base and innovation needed to deal with the complexity and diversity of the problems faced by the territory and built spaces in the 21st century and to contribute to transforming the way the future is envisioned, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In the upcoming 5 years, CiTUA is geared towards enhancing the understanding of the transformative processes within territories and the processes governing the production, use, and regulation of built spaces. The focus is on documenting and researching theories, processes, and methodologies, evaluating governance, management, and financing models, and contribute to the discourse on the future by fostering a connection between theory and practice, science, and society. This engagement extends to decision-making, public policy, and education. Harnessing the inherent dynamism of both urban and non-urban territories, along with the data and information they generate through rigorous and robust collection and analysis, CiTUA objective is to pioneer innovative research that addresses tangible issues while maintaining a connection with the natural environment and its socio-ecological context. Its activities are conducted within an inter and transdisciplinary framework, employing critical and reflective analysis. They emanate from 4 Collaborative Research Labs (RL) - Strategies and Transitions for Sustainability (SENSU), Public Policies for Territory Restructuring (PPOL), Digital Humanities (DH) and Heritage (H), each opening to a pool of thematic areas that generate cross-related projects and spanning diverse spatial and temporal scales. Employing both qualitative and quantitative methods and taking advantage of AI and machine learning, CiTUA focuses on exploring novel approaches that serve as both research tools and instruments for disseminating the knowledge produced. CiTUA collaborates with other R&D centers and in international partnerships, based on projects funded by FCT and the EU, and other for profit and non-profit, public and private entities. CiTUA dedicates itself to the training and empowerment of early researchers, through a collaborative structure that cultivates new leadership for the promotion and organization of research initiatives.It promotes innovative and interdisciplinary endeavors, engaging in the co-production of knowledge, based on open science principles, and providing support to urban practitioners and decision-makers to develop novel solutions for the territory.
