Abstract

The Research Unit on Materials, Energy and Environment for Sustainability-proMetheus is based at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo supported by resources + laboratorial facilities from the School of Techn. and Management and the Agrarian School. Concerning the team technical and scientific skills and expertise in engineering sciences (materials, mechanics, civil, environment and geoinformatics), proMetheus aims to develop an interdisciplinary, holistic, systemic and multi-scalar approach to environmental and societal challenges through the creation scientific and technological knowledge and the development of innovative and intelligent solutions that contribute to a circular, low-carbon economy and sustainable socio-environmental systems: Strategic objectives: 1) development of sustainable energy systems; 2) contribute to a circular economy; and 3) contribute to environmental sustainability; Vision: support policy development based on environmental sustainability, create innovation management tools and entrepreneurship processes, encourage new institutional education and training programs; Mission: focused on materials, energy, environmental management science and engineering to promote social and business innovation, justice and social equity in sustainable socio-environmental systems and governance models, to improve life and environment quality and promote a low-carbon circular economy. proMetheus activities and outcomes aims to respond to scientific challenges in the following areas: 1) Materials and Mechanics: new materials development for application in sustainable energy production and storage, technologies for by-products/wasterecycling and reuse, digital design, biomaterials and manufacture by 3D printing of sustainable mechatronic systems; 2) Sustainable construction: advances regarding environmentally friendly building materials promoting efficient energy systems and sustainable design of buildings and infrastructures; 3) Energy: new energy systems development of, the use of energy resources in a sustainable way, and promoting efficiency energy in industry; 4) Environmental technologies: nature-based solutions and (eco)technologies innovation and optimization for water and soil treatment and restoration, materials and (bio)energy recovery from biomass and waste supported on circular economy models; 5) Socio-environmental and territorial systems: social and environmental systems analysis for (natural) resource management, ecosystem services assessment, and the development of governance models supported in spatial information systems, digital networks and e-infrastructures. The strategy for 2025-29 aims to foster internationalization, develop advanced training programmes (PhD) in collaboration with (inter)national partners, participate in R&D projects, networks, technological interface centres, reinforce human resources and equipment, and actions for dissemination, technology transfer and citizen science.
