Abstract

The Algarve Biomedical Center Research Institute (ABC-Ri) is a dynamic research centre established in 2021 at the University of Algarve. Our mission is to unravel the mechanistic principles underlying major biomedical challenges, focusing on brain, cancer, and lifespan-related conditions. With more than 70 researchers, we develop groundbreaking research and innovation. ABC-Ri has five major goals: i) contribute to the understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying health and age-related conditions; ii) translate the research findings into future clinical applications throughout ABC-RI-led ABC Collaborative Laboratory; iii) collaborate with regional, national, and international stakeholders to project our scientific results; iv) foster career training and development of researchers, ensuring equal opportunities for researchers regardless of background or career stage; and v) engage in science dissemination and communication activities. The ABC-Ri strategic plan for 2025–2029 underscores our commitment to these objectives, promoting research excellence and innovation. We aim to amplify our efforts, solidify our upward trajectory, and provide researchers with valuable training and development opportunities. Consolidate our research facilities and equipment for the next 10 years, thus allowing a sustainable and comprehensive growth strategy. The bottom-up organisation comprising three research hubs and a supporting platform, ABC-Ri cultivates interdisciplinary collaboration and supports research excellence across diverse biomedical fields.
