Abstract

The Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) aims to consolidate its position as a leading Translational Medicine institute, both nationally and internationally. This will be achieved by leveraging the accumulated expertise of our research teams and the surrounding ecosystem of the Health Cluster of the University of Minho School of Medicine, including its affiliated hospitals, the Clinical Academic Center Braga – 2CA, and the tech transfer units TecMinho and B.ACIS. With a strong focus on the identification of disease biomarkers and the development of innovative diagnostics and therapies, the ICVS aims to address unmet medical needs and contribute to the overall quality of the healthcare systems and to better patient outcomes. Within its areas of action, in the 2025-2029 period, the ICVS proposes to: (i) address host-pathogen-microbiome interactions in the context of infectious diseases and detrimental inflammation; (ii) study the underlying causes of neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders at the molecular, cellular, and neuronal circuit levels, considering factors like genetic variants, stress, aging, and inflammation, (iii) identify novel biomarkers, treatment strategies, and resistance mechanisms in poor prognosis cancers, while also advancing preclinical studies on anti-cancer compounds. The focus of our translational approaches ranges from rare genetic disorders to more common and complex conditions. By using cellular and animal models alongside population and patient-based cohorts, ICVS researchers will unveil novel disease mechanisms and propose innovative clinical interventions across emerging fields, at the crossroads of immunology and infection, neurosciences, chronic non-communicable diseases, and cancer. Interventional outputs of our research encompass the development of new pharmacological and advanced therapy approaches, but also the introduction of novel non-invasive surgery methodologies and the integration of enabling technologies into healthcare. To support its mission, the ICVS aims to increase internationalization, strengthen its team by attracting and retaining top-tier researchers with expertise in complementary fields, consolidate its technological platform, expand its disease model portfolio, and reinforce its tech transfer pipeline.
