Abstract

Stemming from the merger of two research units at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) – i.e. CINTESIS - Center for Research in Health Technologies and Services, and UnIC - Cardiovascular Research and Development Unit - RISE-Health has expanded to include MedInUP - Center for Pharmacological Research and Medicinal Innovation, at ICBAS - Abel Salazar Biomedical Sciences Institute, and CICS-UBI - Health Sciences Research Center, at the University of Beira Interior’s Faculty of Health Sciences. Driven by a strategic intent of both coordinators and researchers from these 4 units, RISE-Health has naturally increase its critical mass, enhancing multi- and interdisciplinary synergies, thus resulting in a broader scientific scope and improved territorial cohesion across coastal and interior regions of Portugal. Initially, the new unit integrated 297 researchers from CINTESIS, 70 from UnIC, 24 from MedInUP, and 59 from CICS-UBI, totaling 450 but, surpassing all expectations, RISE-Health has successfully registered 637 integrated researchers at the FCT, with a diversity of backgrounds and a variety of skills and competencies. RISE-Health is focused on clinical and translational research, digital health, artificial intelligence, biotechnologies, biomedical innovation, community health, and nursing research. Based at FMUP, RISE-Health will have 5 management hubs at U.Porto (ICBAS and Faculties Sciences, Pharmacy, Dental Medicine and Nutrition), and 11 others, including 5 public universities (UBI-Beira Interior, UTAD-Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Algarve, Aveiro, and Madeira), 2 private higher education institutions (Universitiesof Fernando Pessoa and Portucalense), 3 nursing schools (ESEP, Santa Maria, Santarém) and ESS from the IPP. Many researchers work in Academic Clinical Centers acros the country, involving numerous hospitals and health centers with university education. RISE-Health distributed and integrated governance model is an example of sustainability within the current National Scientific System, as its scientific facilities and equipments will be made available to all researchers, promoting better integration of research with education activities, and clinical practice with biomedical innovation. RISE-Health is organized on 7 thematic lines, 4 vertical within specific fields of medicine, TL1-Clinical and translational research in cardiovascular sciences, TL2-Neuroscience, TL3-Metabolism, Hormones, and Inflammation, TL4-Hospital care and clinical outcomes and 3 horizontal, TL5-Therapeutic targets and biomedical innovation, TL6-Digital transformation and data science, TL7-Prevention and community health, reflecting translational research methodologies that cover most of medical research topics. Horizontal lines intersect with vertical ones, creating innovation hubs and platforms that drive knowledge and technology transfer, industrial partnerships, international collaboration, and applications for international funding.
