Abstract

LSRE-LCM is a leading national R&D Unit in Chemical Engineering with international recognition in several areas. Its activities have substantially impacted the development of the scientific and technological system through its extensive scientific production and the transfer of technology to the industrial sector, reflected in the creation of spin-offs and contracts with industry. CYCLIC ADSORPTION/REACTION PROCESSES aims to connect fundamental adsorption principles with advanced process intensification techniques. The focus is on pioneering innovative cyclic separation technologies for challenging industrial separations. Integrating reaction and separation within a single unit facilitates sustainable chemical compound production. PRODUCT ENGINEERING encompasses research from chemical processes to final product development, focusing on creating high-value products from bioresource-derived components. This strategy includes the extraction of components from natural resources as well as the integration of micro and nanostructured materials. Perfume and flavour engineering aims to develop new products with increased AI integration. A combination of fundamentals, thermodynamics, and process integration drives the development of a fossil-free, carbon-neutral economy. ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING is essential for implementing EU directives and initiatives. The aim is to create sustainable and advanced technologies for treating soil, wastewater, and air. This aim will help to reduce environmental impact and promote economic benefits. Our research focuses on finding alternative water sources, recovering nutrients and metals, and valorizing waste streams for fuel and chemical production. CARBON MATERIALS, CATALYSIS AND ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT, focuses on Catalysis and Carbon materials, expanding into adjacent domains. Future activities include developing nanostructured materials, CO2 valorization, converting biomass residue to sustainable aviation fuels, and tandem processes for biofuels. Furthermore, we will explore novel carbons derived from cork, advanced technologies for water treatment, and sustainability assessments, including monitoring and assessing the bioaccumulation of micropollutants. PHOTO-ELECTRO-CHEMISTRY AND NATURE-INSPIRED SYSTEMS research group focuses on developing efficient systems for solar fuels, hydrogen and ammonia production, and photothermodynamic therapy. They use semiconductor electrodes and catalysts to achieve this goal. The group also works on developing nature-inspired catalysts for ammonia production. Additionally, they are exploring the potential of photothermodynamic therapy in cancer treatment. The group is committed to overcoming challenges and developing eco-friendly solutions.
