Abstract
CECC – The Research Centre for Communication and Culture is a transdisciplinary research unit in the Humanities which aims to probe the challenges of contemporaneity and to delve into the role of culture in the 21st century.
CECC conducts research in literary, culture, artistic, communication and translation studies, and promotes multidisciplinary dialogues where different theoretical positions and methodologies result from the critical ethos of the Humanities. Its objects of study are texts, understood in a broad semiotic sense, from literature to the visual and performing arts, including discursive production in ‘new media’ and everyday experiences. Its research focuses, therefore, on the discussion of discursive practices, whether traditional or emerging, that support meaning-making networks at the crossroads of the virtual and the material and that time and again demand the reconceptualization of the human.
Since cultural dynamics are characterized by continuous changes brought about by new communicative practices in digital technologies, as well as the challenges of encounter(s) resulting from individuals in flux for a myriad of reasons, the center’s research aims to understand these instabilities and their impact. From the critical angle of the Humanities, modes of inquiry that privilege interpretive and qualitative methods are foregrounded and seek to query latent themes of contemporaneity organized into three fundamental axes: (1) issues of social justice and its different affirmations (ecology, art, history, culture, etc.); (2) translatedness and the complex (mis)encounters between mobility and translatability; and (3) the reformulations of the human at the potentially tensional intersection between memory and technology. CECC organizes its research into five groups which explore these intersections in complementary ways: Cognition& Translatability; Critique, Conflict and Culture; Media Narratives & Cultural Memory; Literature & the Global Contemporary; Digital Literacy & Cultural Change.
The research developed at CECC is based on the belief that the Humanities have a crucial role to play in answering the questions that contemporaneity throws at human beings. To this end, the center’s global project foresees (a) a robust strategy for the recruitment of early-career researchers, which might enable the inclusion of new reflective experiences that question instituted knowledge and promote self-questioning as a fundamental critical exercise; (b) the promotion of formal and informal spaces for dialogue and reciprocal interpellation among researchers; (c) an expansion of the network of non-academic collaborations that enhances the dissemination of research results, as well as the exchange of experiences and knowledge with the extramural community; (d) the reinforcement of the internationalization strategy that has produced solid experiences and results over the years.
