Abstract
C-MAST's strategy is based on the advancement, application and sharing of scientific knowledge. With basic science projects in mechanical engineering and aeronautical engineering, through guidance and mentoring of students, advanced training (PhD programmes of Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, and Industrial Management Engineering at UBI, and Structural Materials Engineering, and Aircraft Structural Integrity at E.I.A. Atlântica), the aim is to promote scientific advances in the areas of multifunctional (nano)materials and structures, system dynamics and control, fluid mechanics, energy and sustainability.
The objective's guidelines are based on consolidating research careers (FCT tenure), promoting a culture of knowledge in society, namely with the dissemination of high-impact journals in "open access", continuing to organise events (conferences, colloquia, seminars and open classes), promoting collaborations with industries (e.g. collaborative doctoral work plans) to promote scientific knowledge and technology transfer.
We propose that C-MAST's strategic funds support and motivate promising young researchers through Priority 1-Internal Strategic Projects of Research and Priority 2-Motivating new PhD students.
For the next period 2025-2029, C-MAST is making a strategic commitment to two priority lines of research:
1) Development of MULTIFUNCTIONAL STRUCTURAL COMPOSITES with self-sensing and self-healing capabilities, simultaneously integrated in the same structure, enabling structural health monitoring (SHM) of the structure.
2) Promoting progress in GREEN ENERGY TRANSITION AND OPTIMIZING ENERGY SYSTEMS through advanced flow control techniques, digital twins and multiphysics modeling.
Strengthening experimental capacity associated with each proposal:
1) mechanical characterisation with micro and nano performances are essential for understanding behavioural phenomena associated with coatings, improving mechanical performance, durability and quality;
2) velocity measurements for high flow precision, high seed fluorescence and chemiluminescence camara will be essential for the plasma flow control to achieving the flame stability optimization.
These proposals are suitable for attracting promising young researchers for 2 research contracts (positions of FCT tenure) and 2 post-docs (medium-term contracts), promoting the consolidation of research careers.
Based on the promotion of merit, the encouragement of healthy competitiveness among new researchers, the aim is to stimulate scientific culture with new ideas that will increase productivity, internationalisation and the attraction of new contracts in research topics aligned with the centre's strategic lines:
5 incentive grants, of 5,000 euros to our young doctoral graduates.
5 mobility grants of young researchers of 1000 euros.
6 PhD student grants to be distributed evenly among the different doctoral programmes.
