Abstract

The Business Research Unit (BRU-Iscte or Unidade de Investigação em Desenvolvimento Empresarial - UNIDE in its Portuguese denomination), hosted at Iscte Knowledge and Innovation (Iscte CI-CVTT), was established in 1994 and is accredited by FCT, having been ranked as Excellent in the last evaluation. Currently, BRU runs 4 accredited doctoral programmes, totally taught in English: PhD in Economics; PhD in Finance; PhD in Management (with 7 specialisations); and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). To support its research endeavours, BRU research team is organised in seven research groups: Accounting; Data Analytics; Economics; Finance; Marketing; Management; Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources. At present, BRU comprises a diverse team of 174 members from 18 nationalities. The Unit operates under a robust governance structure, including a Director, two Deputy Directors, a Scientific Committee, a Scientific Council and a Group Coordinators Committee. An International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB), composed of invited esteemed scholars from diverse academic backgrounds within BRU’s scientific areas, offers invaluable international vision and advice. BRU operates in the new facilities of Iscte CI-CVTT, a centre for technological innovation and entrepreneurship combining social sciences with digital technologies. Iscte CI-CVTT also provides a framework for research and academic integrity within a broader knowledge and innovation ecosystem. BRU strives to conduct research at the highest international standards, following the best ethical practices, while promoting innovation and a positive impact in society. This mission is underpinned in four core pillars: boosting a multidisciplinary international research environment; advancing cutting-edge research and innovation; nurturing top-quality business researchers; and ensuring societal impact and ethical practices. Building on the main achievements in recent years, and in line with its mission, BRU has identified a series of strategic objectives for the period 2025-2029, aiming to contribute to the development of early-career researchers and doctoral candidates, diversify funding sources, maintain excellence in research outcomes, further internationalisation and innovation pathways, while generating societal impact.
