Abstract
CIS-Iscte is dedicated to advancing psychological science for thriving societies. Our strategic plan rests on the three major strands of our mission: (i) pushing the boundaries of knowledge of basic psychological processes, human behavior, and the psychosocial dimensions of societal challenges; (ii) applying this knowledge to inform evidence-based interventions and best practices for practitioners, stakeholders, and communities; and (iii) nurturing talented students and fostering research careers. We have an integrative approach to psychological research, tackling different levels of analysis of psychological phenomena with a plurality of research methods, which enables our team to combine theories and methods across various areas of psychology and bridge them with other disciplines. This expertise allows us to address not only specific research questions in basic and applied psychology but also overarching existing and emerging topic domains, such as those related to geopolitical conflicts, political polarization, digital and green transformations, aging and multicultural societies, and the need to promote healthier and sustainable behaviors.
Our activity plan for 2025-2029 includes continuing to support our four research groups (1) Behavior, Emotion and Cognition (BEC); (2) Community, Education and Development (CED); (3) Health for All: A psychosocial approach (H4A); and (4) Psychology of societal change (PsyChange), with funding, infrastructure, and resources to maintain their high scientific performance and commitment to transferring knowledge to academic audiences and non-academic communities and stakeholders. In addition to promoting collaboration among our research groups, we also aim to combine our expertise in psychology with other social sciences and technologies. CIS is uniquely positioned to accomplish this goal under the recent institutional network established by the Iscte-Knowledge& Innovation consortium and its Associated Laboratory, the SocioDitgital Lab for Public Policy.
To accomplish our mission, we will strengthen our international networks and maintain an active, growing, and sustainable approach to securing international funding. We will continue to invest in our lab infrastructure and technical support, as well as in qualified project management and science communication. Furthermore, we will remain committed to strict ethical standards and partake in current debates about ethical research practices, open science, and citizen participation in scientific endeavors.
Finally, we will strive to maintain our vibrant, international team culture, grounded in principles of inclusiveness, gender equality, plurality, and participation. We will also focus on securing sustainable funding for our PhD program, strengthening scientific employment, and fostering tenure-track research careers.
