Abstract

MagIC is devoted to advancing research in Information Management through an interdisciplinary approach that combines Management and Data Science. Our goal is to investigate the dynamics of information and its interplay with human behavior and organizational structures, developing tools and methods to enhance informed decision-making. Our scientific vision for the next 5 years isguided by the deep integration of Management and Data Science, focusing on tackling societal challenges. We are confident in our expertise in key impact areas such as Health, Smart Cities, Sustainability, Tourism and Hospitality, and Education, allowing us to advance the frontiers of Information Management research with a global impact. In Data Science, we target areas like Generative AI, Large Language Models, and Synthetic Data Generation, while also focusing on Interpretable AI and Geoinformatics. In Management, our research extends to Marketing, Information Systems, Finance& Risk Management, and Public Policy, integrating AI and advanced analytics. Across thematic lines, MagIC's focus on AI in Health will be devoted to personalized therapies, computer-aided surgery, and real-time monitoring systems. In Smart Cities, MagIC will enhance energy monitoring, urban mobility, and clean energy usage. In Sustainability, we will utilize GeoAI for crop optimization, asset inspection, and emergency response. In Tourism & Hospitality, we will apply Generative AI and digitalization to facilitate tourism. In Education, MagIC will leverage Data Science and Generative AI for academic achievement prediction and equity enhancement. To this aim, our strategic plan (2025-2029) leverages a state-of-the-art NOVA IMS and MagIC facility (under construction) to achieve excellence across six key axes. In Research Excellence& Interdisciplinarity, our strategy involves recruiting talent, increasing high-tier publications, and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations. For International Recognition, we will elevate MagIC's global reputation through active participation in networks and conferences, and by establishing programs like the Visiting Programme and International Summer School. In Training, we will strengthen the NOVA IMS PhD program, increase the number of PhD fellowships, integrate students into research projects, and establishing a joint Doctorate. For Research Funding, we will offer grant writing training, participate in networks, and collaborate with industry partners to secure competitive funding at higher TRLs. Our Broader Impact strategy emphasizes communication, outreach, and open access practices, promoting innovation through collaborative projects. Finally, our commitment to Organizational Culture involves transparency, equity, and inclusion. We will develop a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion strategy, and establish mentorship programs to foster a thriving and inclusive research community, particularly targeted to early career researchers and women.
