Abstract

GHTM is a Research, Development, and Innovation (RD&I) Unit in Global Health (GH) and Tropical Medicine (TM), unique at the country level, whose mission is to conduct research, training, and implement equity in sustainable GH practices, with the anticipated impact of generating scientific evidence to inform health policies within a GLOBAL HEALTH IN ONE HEALTH VISION paradigm. GHTM operates within the institutional framework of the IHMT, an organic Unit of NOVA University, and integrates the Associated Laboratory REAL, to conduct cutting-edge research with the aim of translating findings into actionable public policies. GHTM is organized in four Research Groups (RGs) covering the four main areas of scientific activity: Population Health Policies and Services; Vector Borne Diseases; Pathogen Resistance, Infection and Molecular Epidemiology; Clinical Tropical Medicine, interacting along Cross-Cutting Issues (CCIs). The six GHTM CCIs represent topics of common relevance across RGs and complement support/sustain the accomplishment of GHTM's vision, mission, and expected impact: Genomic Surveillance and Population Mobility, Antimicrobial Resistance and Drug Discovery, Implementation and Translational Research, Host-Pathogen Interactions, Information for Health and Development and Fair Research Partnerships. RGs and CCIs are supported by infrastructures that include biomedical facilities, data management resources and policymaking support. Since 2015, GHTM has been at the forefront of GH and TM research, and now aims to consolidate its position by leveraging past findings and ongoing partnerships with academia, private and public institutions, both nationally and internationally. Members of the GHTM have made significant contributions to the conceptual literature on GLOBAL HEALTH and ONE HEALTH, shaping the Unit's identity and strategic direction, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. For 2025-2029, GHTM aims to consolidate itself as a leading Biomedical RD&I Unit fostering collaboration among Portuguese-speaking institutions at a global level. The strategic objectives are: to improve equitable health and well-being of populations, promoting Universal Health Coverage for all; to investigate interactions of pathogens, vectors, hosts, and environment to strengthen local and global control capacities; to assist control of infectious diseases minimizing emergence of antimicrobial resistance; to generate high-quality evidence to improve the clinical care of tropical diseases in high disease-burden settings and to prevent travel-associated health conditions. The rational for the future work of GHTM is framed by three operational pillars - the institutional framework, the process of acquiring and consolidating knowledge and engaging in fundamental debates. By promoting advances in GH and TM, GHTM aims to make meaningful contributions to society, addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
