Abstract

CIIMAR is dedicated to excellent research, driving innovation and promoting technology transfer to a diversity of end-users. Our commitment extends to enhancing pre- and postgraduate training, promoting scientific dissemination through Open Science and supporting public policies in research, ocean and water management, and environmental conservation. Operating within a multicultural environment with over 35 nationalities, our mission thrives through extensive international collaborations across projects, students’ supervision, networks, and infrastructures. To implement our strategy, we harness the expertise of a highly qualified multidisciplinary team of researchers, who work in a stimulating and interdisciplinary environment, supported by R&I managers, technicians and administrative staff. CIIMAR's main scientific goal is to generate fundamental and applied knowledge in marine biotechnology, aquaculture, seafood safety, global changes and ecosystem services. This knowledge is effectively disseminated to relevant end users, fostering employment opportunities, supporting public policies, and driving economic growth and advancement within the Blue Economy. Our objectives are set to address societal and economic needs, using a multidisciplinary approach: - To foster responsible and sustainable exploration and utilization of the Ocean’s key biological and genetic resources, using state-of-the-art biotechnological approaches, by developing in-depth knowledge, products or services to address different societal challenges. - To promote aquaculture sustainability and food security within a vast diversity of species, in a challenging context of global changes. To elucidate and comprehend complex evolutionary traits, decipher marine organisms’ life cycles and physiology, promote animal health and welfare, and evaluate seafood quality and safety for human consumption. - To advance scientific knowledge through the creation of new data, resources and tools regarding ocean and connecting ecosystems, all aimed at promoting sustainable ocean governance. To develop pioneering technologies to harness the potential of marine renewable energies and to promote climate change resilience in the long term. CIIMAR is committed to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030), to national and regional smart specialisation strategies (MAR2030, Portugal2030, NORTE2030), and to relevant European agendas. Through research and innovation, we aspire to promote human health and well-being, develop new marine biotechnological products, enhance food quality, safety and sustainable production in aquaculture, contribute to ocean conservation and sustainability, mitigate the impacts of climate change and pollution, facilitate access to sustainable and cost-effective energy through marine renewable sources. We advocate for a holistic, interdisciplinary approach to Ocean Sciences and Technologies, guided by principles of equality and inclusivity.
