Abstract

The Center for Physics and Advanced Materials Engineering (C#) studies Fundamental Physics and Materials Science& Engineering. Its activities focus on the thematic lines of Structure and Phases of Matter, Quantum Technologies, Materials for Medicine & Health, and Materials for Energy & Sustainability. The Structure and Phases of Matter thematic line aims at studying the behaviour of condensed matter and involves a wide spectrum of theoretical and experimental studies, from the quantum level at the scale of atoms and molecules to nanostructured self-organized systems. This thematic line focuses on both fundamental research on structural and molecular dynamics properties of condensed matter systems and their potential for development in technology and biomedicine. The line of Quantum Technologies (QT) aims at developing theoretical research in 3 main directions: Quantum Computation& Simulation; Quantum Networks; Energetics of QC. The QT Team has participated in 9 EU & 1 American projects since 2018. It has had pioneering contributions on QC for HEP as well as on hybrid QC, it is putting forward the first secure quantum-sensor network protocols, and it has pioneered research on quantum approaches for energy-efficient computation. On the experimental front, the focus is on the hacking of quantum photonic devices for secure quantum communications. The Materials for Medicineand Health line aims at optimizing the effectiveness of extracorporeal blood circulation devices, artificial organs, and drug delivery vehicles through hemo/biocompatible materials through a combination of nano-design and manufacturing combined with an understanding and control of the Chemistry, Physics, and Biology of blood-material interfaces. This line works in close collaboration with reference hospitals and clinics, as well as multinational companies in the health sector. Sustainability and energy efficiency are central to the future of Humanity and the ongoing decarbonization process. The Materials for Energy and Sustainability line develops low-cost materials for efficient devices (electrodes and membranes) in view of energy storage and conversion. In addition, it develops methods based on additive manufacturing and surface engineering based on advanced laser processing techniques, which are at the heart of Industry 4.0 and sustainable manufacturing. C# is part of the consortium of the Laboratory of Physics of Materials and Emerging Technologies (LaPMET), an Associated Laboratory with an Excellent rating which also includes the IFIMUP and CFMUP research units from the Universities of Porto and Minho.
