Abstract

ICNOVA explores contemporary challenges and opportunities within media, communication and arts, so as to intervene in society. It adopts participatory and engaged research approaches and fosters national and international collaborations. Its overarching goal is to inform public debates, policies, and societal practices while empowering underrepresented and vulnerable groups. Researching in an ever-evolving and uncertain world, ICNOVA is focused on three goals: 1. Examining ongoing transformations to media landscapes, including sociotechnical, interpersonal, affective, cognitive, cultural, artistic and creative dimensions. 2. Fostering research collaborations and engagement with social actors to understand and act upon on how forms of media-based communication shape our everyday live and wellbeing; 3. Promoting artistic and scientific knowledge production, supporting evidence-based decision-making, and contributing to the scientific community and world agendas. ICNOVA research agenda for 2025-2029 involves two axes across different temporalities: Axis 1. Focusing on the social and ecological responsibilities in contemporary mediated landscapes, we are committed to the study of: Pasts: how we were made examines power relations, mainstream and minority practices, media practices, personal and collective memories, historical, artistic and technological materialities and inscriptions. Presents: where we are now examines current issues such as polarisation, populisms, environmental hazards, deep-seated inequalities, as well as overconsumption, information overload and avoidance, and decision-making processes. Futures: how it can be otherwise involves practices of anticipation, preparation and speculation, as well as the study of future counter-narratives. Axis 2. Focusing on the socio-cultural, artistic and performance dimensions of emergent media technologies, we are committed to the study of: Pasts: Digital media's history, archaeology, and societal reception enable a critical view of modernity's "Ever-New" ideology. Artistic and theoretical works examine past and present media, promoting critical thinking about media. Presents: Present-day concerns involve the study of cultural reinventions, the arts, the politics and affordances of emerging technologies, and their relation to performance and cognition. Additionally, artistic works and the performing arts engage in recreating culture and addressing social and ecological imbalances. Futures: Re-imagining and fostering (im)possible worlds that are at the heart of a creative approach to a datafied society. While envisioning futures crosses all activities, we emphasise engagements with artistic and technological experimentation. ICNOVA pursues its agenda through five research groups with emphasis placed on the principle that the groups operate in close articulation and on cross-based themes. The track record of working with, and for, distinct publics will continue to be one of our key orientations.
