Abstract
CeDRI (Research Centre in Digitalization and Intelligent Robotics) is an applied interdisciplinary research centre that brings together researchers from Electronics, Computer Science and Mathematics to develop and apply scientific knowledge in the scope of the digital transition, contributing for the development of the scientific and technological system and promoting the competitiveness of socio-economic system. A particular emphasis is devoted to regions of low population and economic density, characterized by small scale SMEs and a rarefied local industrial system, whose competitiveness is strongly affected by the difficulties to access industrial innovation, but also contributing to the national and European cohesion, sustainability and competitiveness. In the era of the 4th industrial revolution, CeDRI conducts applied research on developing innovative approaches that cover the entire path of sensing, connectivity, computing and actuation, having data as mainstream pillar, complemented with digital enabling technologies, e.g., cyber-physical systems (CPS), Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.
The general objectives of CeDRI for 2025-2029 are:
1. To contribute to develop science and technology in the scope of the digital transformation, applying advanced forms of communication and computing based on cyber-physical systems, AI, robotics and human-machine interaction, addressing practical problems defined by SMEs;
2. To contribute to transfer scientific and technological knowledge through dissemination, participation in international networks and implementation of proof-of-concept systems leading to prototypes and future matured industrial applications, aiming for technological innovation;
3. To contribute to training highly-qualified technic-scientific human resources through the supervision of PhD and MSc research works on the aforementioned topics.
To implement the strategic programme, CeDRI includes 25 integrated members with PhD, 38 PhD students, and 3 collaborators in the scope of partnerships with other research units, playing also an important role in the partnership under the SusTEC Associate Laboratory.
The management of CeDRI is performed according to the FCT multi-annual funding program rules, through a flexible organization based on a Coordination Board, which comprises the Coordinator, Paulo Leitão, and two senior researchers, Ana I. Pereira and José Lima, a Scientific Council and an External Advisory Board. The later includes three well-known experts in the CeDRI fields, from academia and industry: Duncan McFarlane (Cambridge University, UK), Stamatis Karnouskos (SAP, Germany) and Armando W. Colombo (Hochschule Emden-Leer, Germany).
CeDRI believes that solid applied research on digitalization and intelligent robotics can contribute to the development of more intelligent, efficient, adaptive, customized, and sustainable industrial processes.
