Abstract
The Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM) emerged from the merger of “Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes” (iMM) and “Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência” (IGC), both institutions renowned for their excellent in science and innovative practices. GIMM embraces an ambitious vision for fundamental scientific exploration in Biomedicine and its profound impact on global health and well-being,
GIMM is dedicated to becoming a pioneering force at the forefront of transdisciplinary research aimed at unravelling the fundamental mysteries of life. Since its inception, GIMM has been committed to addressing current and future global health challenges, pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge, and forging innovative pathways for the betterment of humanity.
GIMM's mission is multifaceted, underpinned by a steadfast commitment to scientific excellence and societal impact, and laid upon the following key pillars:
1. Frontier Science: Fostering a culture of curiosity-driven research and promoting open collaboration across disciplines in the ONE HEALTH domain.
2. Health Outcomes and Equity: Championing translational and clinical studies to bridge the gap between discovery and application.
3. Innovation and Translation: Ensuring rapid translation of scientific and technological advances into prevention, diagnosis, and treatment solutions for diseases.
4. Future Generations: Designing and implementing innovative training programs for scientists and support staff in partnership with leading national and international institutions to nurture the next generation of versatile and talented scientists.
5. Beyond GIMM walls: Leading in shaping the national and European R&D landscape, collaborating with other institutions, and promoting excellence and innovation in research and training. Engaging and inspiring members of society to actively contribute to scientific and societal development through citizen science and by expanding the links between science, art, and other fields of culture.
The GIMM initiative stands out for its timely relevance and significant due to several key factors. It leverages the collective research prowess of the IGC and iMM in the fields of Biology and Biomedicine using a multi-disciplinary approach. Moreover, it seeks to build strategic alliances to secure sustainable funding, prioritizing the optimization of current technological resources to drive biomedical research forward. Finally, it aims to influence R&I policy to foster an environment that support scientific advances and societal impact.
GIMM aspires to become an internationally renowned ONE HEATLH science hub through its innovative discovery research, technology transfer, training, and societal programs.
