Abstract
The iA* Research Unit in Arts emerges from the growth and autonomization of the Labcom Arts Research Group, whose members were responsible for consolidating the curricular offerings of the Department of Arts at UBI, which has nearly a thousand students in courses such as Multimedia Design, Industrial Design, Fashion Design, Game Design, Cinema, and Media Arts, also supporting existing doctoral programs.
Involving 113 researchers, more than half of whom hold doctorates, iA* aims to contribute to the fullest fulfillment of the university's nature and mission by providing the necessary framework for research in and through the Arts, fostering international network cooperation with counterpart entities, and strengthening the national research ecosystem, recognizing knowledge as a public good.
Continuing a series of emblematic actions and events, iA* reconciles advanced research on contemporary artistic and projectual phenomena, considering their multiplicity, with the intersection of artistic perspective on major societal challenges, without losing sight of self-referential, procedural, and ontological aspects of the expanded field of Art, from its most canonical to its most hybrid, emergent, multimedia, and multisensorial forms.
To fulfill its mission, the iA* structure ensures logistics and dissemination but adopts a participatory governance model, articulating senior and early-career researchers, entrusting the conduct of its research lines and issues to 5 internal laboratories, iA*Labs:
CineMAtic — Interdisciplinary research between Cinema and Media Arts, their aesthetics, formats, and materialities, promoting experimentation with new expressions and relationships between image, sound, theory, poetics, and writing.
SENSORIA — Conceptualization and development of theoretical-experimental, immersive, and/or interactive projects, exploring the relationships between art, science, and technology.
PArTE — Transdisciplinarity between Heritage, Art, Territory, and Ecology, emphasizing the interdependence of natural and social systems from an artistic and projectual perspective.
DESIGNALab — Theoretical, critical, and experimental interrogation of phenomena related to Design in the contemporary world.
DESSIDE — Focus on Design for Sustainability, Entrepreneurship, Social Innovation, and Development.
The activity of these iA*Labs aligns with the 5 main directives of the Unit: 1. Consolidation of research practices and infrastructures through the Arts and Design-oriented; 2. Internationalization, participation in projects, networking, and fundraising; 3. Academic integration of excellent research; 4. Dissemination of knowledge, editing, and exhibition; and 5. Relationship with the community, territory, and environment with social impact.
