Abstract
The Católica Biomedical Research Centre (CBR) aims to become a prominent leader in fundamental biomedical research by attracting renowned scientists and promoting innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. Established in 2021 at the Gulbenkian Science Institute, CBR plans to move to the Oeiras Life Sciences Campus in 2027, joining a dynamic community of over 2,000 researchers. This relocation is critical in enhancing strategic partnerships essential to CBR’s mission, facilitating new collaborations, and expanding its research capabilities. Integral to its strategy is the adoption of a service-sharing policy and a commitment to the 'One Health' approach, supporting CBR's sustainability.
From 2025 to 2029, CBR will strategically use FCT R&D Unit pluriannual funding to invest in highly skilled personnel and advanced scientific equipment, necessary for establishing a state-of-the-art imaging and flow cytometry facility. This period will focus on significant advancements towards CBR’s strategic goals:
1. Strengthening the research portfolio by attracting international talent across various scientific disciplines, implementing thorough external research assessments, improving visibility and reputation internationally, and investingin innovative technologies.
2. Creating a comprehensive career development framework that includes mentoring and training in both scientific and transversal skills to enhance the career prospects of future research leaders.
3. Integrating research with medical education and healthcare to translate discoveries into practical health benefits, deepening collaborations with the Clinical Academic Centre Católica-Luz.
4. Aiming to improve scientific and health literacy through educational and public engagement programmes that emphasise inclusivity and community involvement in Oeiras.
These efforts are designed to establish CBR as a key player in biomedical research, contributing thoughtfully to health sciences while fostering a well-informed community capable of addressing future health challenges.
