Abstract

ICS-ULisboa is a beacon of excellence and a pioneering institution in the social sciences in Portugal. For decades a symbol of interdisciplinarity and scientific innovation, ICS-ULisboa is one of the oldest Portuguese research institutes, today with a tripartite identity. It is one of the 18 organic units of the University of Lisbon (ULisboa), an R&D unit and an Associate Laboratory (since 2002; status renewed until 2030) in the Portuguese S&T system. Additionally, ICS-ULisboa offers a strong programme of advanced research-led postgraduate education. Taking advantage of its southernmost location in Europe, ICS-ULisboa’s distinctive geography enhances its capacity to build intellectual bridges worldwide. ICS-ULisboa generates innovative research of international standing and global significance on the multifaceted challenges of our contemporary world, engaging with the global intersections of Lusophone, European, African, Latin American and Asian societies. ICS-ULisboa is organized into seven Research Groups (RGs) that contribute to knowledge production and societal impact within the framework of four Thematic Lines (TLs): Inclusion and Vulnerabilities (IVTL); Citizenship (CTL), Sustainability (STL) and Memory and Legacies (MLTL). For 2025-2029, ICS-ULisboa ’s main objectives are to strengthen its leading position in Portugal and reinforcing its international standing as an interdisciplinary social sciences institute in Europe. Multidisciplinary organization and cross-disciplinary approaches to the manifold challenges of contemporary societies (locally and globally) are distinctive of ICS-ULisboa identity and highlight its innovative potential for the social sciences at both national and international levels. The interplay between the dynamic of RGs and the agenda-setting force of TLs will invigorate inter- and multidisciplinary research for 2025-2029. Enhancing its established research and public policy agenda, ICS-ULisboa is addressing new risks, emerging threats and opportunities faced by contemporary societies in an era of planetary turbulence. The transformative shifts brought upon the world by technological (AI), climate, social, and economic changes, are woven into the core of ICS-ULisboa’s Thematic Lines. New initiatives will maximize the collective potential for research excellence, innovation, internationalization, and societal impact. These will include: strengthening the RGs’ capacity and interconnection within the TLs; developing ICS-ULisboa data archives and infrastructures to support research; improving and expanding post-graduate programs in connection with RGs and TLs; renewing research staff and supporting career development; deepening the democratic nature of institutional governance; fostering outreach through a new cutting-edge Social Observatory, and reinforce ICS-ULisboa’s international reach and potential for global impact.
