Abstract

CEGIST is the Center for Management Studies of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), a multidisciplinary research center at the forefront of Engineering and Management. The center is renowned for its high-quality research and international collaboration, addressing real-world challenges and collaborating with industry and global partners to facilitate technology transfer and support policy development aligned with UN-SGDs. Comprising 34 Integrated Members, 28 Associate Members, 32 PhD Students, and 3 Support Staff representing 12 nationalities and gender balanced, CEGIST is led by an elected Executive Board supported by a committee of Principal Investigators across five key research areas. A Scientific Council and an External Advisory Board, which guide our long-term strategic vision, further enrich the governance structure. For 2025-2029, CEGIST strategy is built on 3 pillars: - CONTINUING EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH, by advancing knowledge through peer-reviewed research and participating in diverse national and international projects. - EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION, by training PhD students for top-tier employability and pioneering innovative teaching methodologies. -ENGAGEMENT WITH SOCIETY THROUGH OPEN SCIENCE, by developing solutions for organizational needs, supporting policymaking, widely disseminating knowledge, and aligning research with UN-SDGs to maximize societal impact. STRATEGIC GOALS A. Increase national and international funding by enhancing researcher capabilities in grant writing and proposal development, and by fostering greater collaboration with various research entities and industry innovators through strategic use of platforms for coordination of large international projects. B. Attract, develop, and retain top-tier talent through targeted hires and career development programs that include prestigious post-doc fellowships and funding opportunities for MSc students to transition into PhD roles. C. Strengthen collaboration with industry and public entities to enhance real-world impact and increase industry-funded projects. D1. Promote interdisciplinarity within CEGIST through internal funding calls for collaborative and exploratory projects and by establishing a PhD student committee to foster a unified research community. D2. Focus on under-realized research areas by prioritizing them for new hires and Pre-Award office support, to aid secure necessary funding. E. Expand international reach by incentivizing global collaborations and supporting short-term research exchanges. F. Boost communication, dissemination, and impact through increased internet presence, regular reports, and active participation in public outreach, emphasizing the importance of Open Science. Our ambitious strategic plan will position CEGIST as a key player in shaping the fields of engineering and management research, driving significant societal advancement.
