Abstract
CEI is dedicated to producing top-tier knowledge and conducting research of excellence, addressing global challenges. Our approach is based on local and sectorial analyses that can be adapted and applied globally, contributing to tackling these challenges effectively. From sustainability and climate change to transnational organized crime, threats to democracy, global security, and peace, CEI's research provides insights and potential solutions to these critical issues.
In the coming years, CEI aims to reaffirm its position as a leading reference in international studies, not only in Portugal but also globally. Over the last six years (2018-2023), the Centre has significantly grown in the quality and quantity of its research outputs, internationalization efforts, and the integration of teaching and research. Building upon this growth, we have restructured our research groups to better address key areas: Global Politics and Security; Democracy, Activism, and Citizenship; and Sustainable Societies. These groups are further framed by five regional lines: Asia; Middle East& North Africa; Africa; Latin America; and Europe and Transatlantic Relations.
This restructuring aims to foster closer collaboration among researchers, with the goal of developing interdisciplinary and comparative projects. By enhancing this interconnection, CEI strengthens its activities and projects, aligning with Iscte’s broader agenda towards contemporary social sciences.
Looking ahead to our strategic vision for 2025-2029, CEI plans to reinforce its international position by enlarging andconsolidating its research team. This includes supporting research careers within Iscte and leading competitive international research projects. We will also prioritize deeper integration between research and teaching, supporting activities at the postgraduate level.
Based upon our research groups, we will focus on the following issues:
1. Global Politics and Security: Focus on governance and global security challenges, including traditional threats to peace and cross-border challenges like terrorism prevention and the climate change-security nexus.
2. Democracy, Activism, and Citizenship: Emphasis on multidisciplinary approaches to democracy, grassroots activism, and citizenship in diverse geographical contexts, exploring politics from various perspectives.
3. Sustainable Societies: Promote innovation in understanding social-environmental change, studying manifestations, interconnections, and implications for development and socio-environmental change.
Through these efforts, CEI aims to become an international hub for research in International Studies, attracting top researchers and contributing significantly to the global knowledge landscape.
