Abstract

The Portucalense Institute for Legal Research (IJP) is a research center focused on legal sciences with the main goal of promoting, supporting, and spreading scientific research in this field conducted at Portucalense University and the Polytechnic Institutes of Leiria and Lisbon. IJP hosts four research groups: Patrimony, International Politics and Governance, Persons, and Procedural Law. During the 2018-2023 period, the team members published 1295 scholarly works. In addition, during that time, researchers at IJP worked together on 18 funded projects at both national and European levels. They also played a role in training numerous PhD students through national and international programs, including European Doctors. We also offered a diverse range of learning opportunities, including seminars, workshops, and specialized courses, which involved 700+ students, 40+ scholars, and 80 legal experts. Furthermore, IJP hosts Revista Jurídica Portucalense, simultaneously indexed in Scopus and Web of Science (to the best of our knowledge the only one in the country). During this period, 149 articles were published. All of these articles were published without any costs to the authors and are freely available to the public. There was also a focus on sharing research in Portuguese. During the 2025-2029 period, IJP's research will be centered around the same four research groups. However, these groups will delve into various thematic areas in a matrix-like structure, which will ensure the intersection of law, technology, and policy. Key research areas will include the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on law, maritime law and sustainability, global health governance, and human rights and global policy. Transversal to these thematic areas will be the goals: advancements in knowledge, advanced training and mentorship, internationalization and networking, knowledge transfer, and commitment to open science. We plan to use the researcher-practitioner approach, which includes scientific publications, jurisprudence, expert opinions and active involvement with society. We aim to contribute to the training of the next generation of lawmakers and legal practitioners, by providing them with scientific sound methods and tools to develop the current state of the art, by providing training, summer schools and lectures with top experts in the field. Apart from continuing the work that has been made within the European Law Association and as a Sponsor Member of the American Society of Comparative Law, we plan on building strong relationships with top institutions around the world and becoming an integral part of global research networks. In addition, we plan to actively involve the public by hosting seminars, and open days, and launching an online platform called Legal4people. This platform will be easily accessible through the Research unit website and will also be connected to various social media platforms.
