Abstract
The Electromechatronic Systems Research Centre (CISE), established in 2015, at the University of Beira Interior (UBI), is focused on the study of electromechatronic systems, integrating into a single domain the following four main engineering areas: electrical, mechanical, electronic, and industrial engineering. CISE comprises four dedicated research facilities, the Laboratory of Electromechatronic Systems (CISE | LSE) at the UBI, the Laboratory of Electric Energy Systems (CISE | LSEE) at the University of Algarve (UAlg), the Laboratory of Electromechatronic Systems Modelling (CISE | LESM) at the University Mohamed Khider in Biskra, Algeria, and the Guarda International Research Station on Renewable Energies (CISE | GIRS-RES) at the Polytechnic of Guarda.
The generalobjectives of CISE scientific plan are focused on the areas of: fault diagnosis; fault tolerance; reliability; energy efficiency; control; smart grids and industrial management.
These objectives are attained through the implementation of seven distinctive work packages (WPs):
• WP 1: Renewable Energies
• WP 2: Trigeneration Systems
• WP 3: Transportation Electrification
• WP 4: Power Electronics Components
• WP 5: AC& DC Electric Grids
• WP 6: Testing & Maintenance
• WP 7: Industrial Management Systems
The implementation of this set of WPs comprises the development of simulation models and computational programs followed by the construction of suitable prototypes for the conduction of several laboratory tests. On-site experimental validation is also carried out when appropriate.
The objectives defined for each WP are consolidated through four mobilising strategic projects, considered the driving forces forthe implementation of CISE strategic plan:
i) Technologies for the availability, efficiency, reliability, and lifecycle optimisation of smart DC microgrids components;
ii) Hybridisation and coordinated exploitation of multiple energy vectors (electricity, thermal energy and green hydrogen) as strategy to optimise efficiency and reduce energy waste of appealing renewable energy technologies;
iii) Innovative power conversion solutions for static (fast charging) and dynamic (wireless power transfer) charging, as facilitators of transportation electrification;
iv) Efficient and robust control and condition monitoring strategies for the incoming generation of multiphase motor drives.
The technological focus of this strategic plan provides excellent opportunities for the increment of multidisciplinary national and international research projects; prolific and long-term collaborations with renowned industries, government agencies, and technical societies; profitable patents; high quality conference participation; high impact factor journal publications; attractive industry contracts; advanced training opportunities; conferences and seminars organisation; active involvement in the promotion of scientific and technological culture through actions of particular relevance to society.
