Abstract
iBB is a multidisciplinary unit at IST, University of Lisbon, pioneering research at the interface of life sciences and engineering. iBB facilities are located in the campi of Alameda (Lisbon) and TagusPark (Oeiras). iBB is hosted by the nonprofit private institution IST-ID and is one of the 3 R&D units of the Associate Laboratory Institute for Health and Bioeconomy (i4HB). The 67 doctorates of iBB are affiliated to 5 research groups that span the areas of bioprocess engineering, biological sciences, biospectroscopy and stem cell engineering. Members in each RG share expertise, skills and interests within their disciplinary areas. The overarching objective is to foster synergies and encourage joint projects across RGs to maximize the collective expertise of the team.
In iBB we firmly believe that bioengineering and biosciences are pivotal in addressing humanity's most critical development goals. Our mission is to unravel the intricacies of living systems while applying engineering principles. Through its activities, iBB educates and empowers younger scientists and bioengineers to drive Europe’s prosperity. Knowledge transfer and promotion of science awareness are two additional vectors of iBB’s activities. Core values of iBB are a commitment to integrity and ethical conduct, excellence in R&I, and knowledge sharing.
iBB main target areas are the Human Health and Bioeconomy sectors. In Human Health, researchers develop new engineering approaches to support the manufacturing of cellular/molecular products for gene and cell therapies and regenerative medicine. Tools, technologies, and biomaterials are studied to aid in disease modeling, drug screening, delivery, and toxicology/pharmacological testing. Focus is also placed on cell and molecular mechanisms underlying degenerative diseases, microbial drug resistance and opportunistic infections. These efforts are backed by functional, comparative and meta-genomic tools and state-of-the-art biophysical techniques.
In the Bioeconomy, iBB addresses challenges related to the sustainable biological production of biofuels, food, value-added bioproducts, carbon-based building blocks and commodities from agro-forest residues, and water resource recovery, and to the exploitation of marine microbial diversity as source of bioactive compounds. Enzymatic and cell biotransformations are explored to obtain building blocks. Data analysis tools, bioprocessing technologies and materials are developed to solve bottlenecks characteristic of bio manufacturing.
iBB is dedicated to global scientific advancement. Our outreach is evidenced by a large network of partners from prestigious institutions worldwide, co-authorship of 47% articles with colleagues from other countries and active involvement in several EU research projects (e.g. 7 ongoing as of 2024).
