Abstract
Based on the activity of 3 research clusters in design — Research for Culture; Research for Society; Research for Life — in the laboratory activity and our "extensions" — Casa do Design; Exploratório; Matosinhos Design Market Incubator — Special Projects — notably the Porto Design Biennale — our editorial activity and integration into research consortia and networks, the Activities Plan for the 2025—2029 quinquennium pursues the objective of consolidating esad—idea as a Research and Development Unit that has undeniably contributed to the promotion of Portuguese design culture, its internationalization, the transfer of knowledge between academia and civil society, and the mediation of research and science communication to different audiences. Esad—idea will be responsible for the editions of the Porto Design Biennale to be held in 2025, 2027, and 2029. We will continue to ensure the programming and management of Casa do Design, integrating the Portuguese Contemporary Art Network, with 15 exhibitions planned, 8 of which will have catalog publication. The editorial activity of esad—idea envisages the publication of 14 books and a periodic publication (journal). Activity with the public sector is an important pillar of our activities plan. esad—idea will ensure the operation of a cluster — ESAD Design Cluster — based in a facility capable of incubating projects and supporting knowledge transfer between academia, industry, and civil society. esad—idea will be the leading Research Unit of the Blue Design Alliance throughout the period 2025/2029, a consortium funded by the PRR focused on the valorization of water, maritime, and river resources; and an active partner of the Be@t consortium — Bioeconomy at textiles, also funded by the PRR and based on three fundamental pillars: biomaterials, circularity, sustainability, and society. Esad—idea is a member of BEDA — The Bureau of European DesignAssociations, currently being the sole representative of Portugal. For the period 2025/2029, the active involvement of esad—idea researchers in actions promoted by BEDA will result in 12 missions and the organization of a virtual conference organized by esad—idea. 35 scientific meetings are planned, including the organization of 2 large international conferences: the Cumulus Conference (2026) and a conference in partnership with UNITAR. The Activities Plan includes strengthening the laboratory dimension and intensity of esad—idea and the creation of a Materials Bank. The activities plan envisages the completion of 3 R&D projects by 2029 and the existence of 8 active projects. A Doctoral Program will be submitted to A3ES in 2025, with it expected to be operational by 2025/2026.
