Abstract

CREATE, a new R&D Unit, emerges from heightened collaborative efforts and a unified strategic vision, dedicated to addressing critical challenges within the Earth System and Energy domains, and promoting technological innovation. The new Unit seeks to fortify its presence in the global scientific scene, while concurrently advancing national and regional endeavors, leveraging human capital and existing infrastructure. Settled in Alentejo, one of Europe's underprivileged regions, CREATE is poisedto address urgent environmental and societal issues amid climate, economic, and demographic transformations. By bringing together researchers from the University of Évora and the Polytechnic Institute of Beja, CREATE embodies a harmonious collaboration between academia, industry, and society, in line with governmental policies aimed at promoting synergies between educational subsystems and fostering regional development. With a multidisciplinary team comprising 121 members, including 48 Integrated PhD researchers and 39 PhD students, CREATE boasts a balanced gender distribution and a wealth of scientific expertise across various fields. Organized around four major scientific areas and one technological, CREATE's research endeavors are centered on addressing key environmental challenges such as climate change, water and ecosystem management, energy transition, and natural hazards. Through interdisciplinary collaboration and a structured approach, CREATE aims to make impactful contributions to societal well-being and industrial innovation, while supporting public policies. Driven by strategic objectives focused on advancing research, promoting knowledge transfer, and nurturing the next generation of researchers, CREATE is committed to scientific excellence and societal transformation. Its activities align with Sustainable Development Goals and the European Green Deal, reflecting its dedication to addressing global challenges and promoting environmental sustainability. Beyond academia, CREATE actively engages in knowledge and technology transfer initiatives, aiming to catalyze societal change, bridging the gap between research, industry, and society. CREATE seeks to attract top talents, support ECR career growth, and mentoring numerous students. Leveraging current national and international scientific policies, it cultivates a dynamic human resources pyramid, emphasizing mentorship and mobility for career progression. Involvement in PhD programs and international networks demonstrate CREATE's commitment to excellence and global engagement. Supported by a network of national and international entities, CREATE promotes knowledge transfer, open science principles, and gender equality, aiming to catalyze societal transformation. “Advancing Earth System and Energy Solutions, bridging boundaries, empowering minds, CREATing futures”, is CREATE's motto.
