Abstract
Instituto Dom Luiz (IDL) is the Portuguese leading research institution in the field of Earth Sciences, since 1853. IDL is the home of more than 100 researchers, fully engaged with international top quality advanced research in all of the Earth’s spheres. It also hosts a vibrant community of more than 70 PhD students and collaborators from 5 Universities, one Polytechnic Institute and several strategic State Laboratories and Agencies.
For more than 170 years now, IDL researchers have been constantly probing our planet, from the high atmosphere to the darkening deepness of the biggest oceans, from the coastal areas to the top of the highest mountain chains, from the shallow crustal domains to the deep mantle in the interior of the Earth, always, in a relentlessly permanent effort to better understand the main processes governing the complex dynamics of our home planet.
In present day, IDL’s research is focused on three main strategic objectives: 1) to better understand the ongoing Climate Change, enhancing predictions at different time scales and anticipating mitigation and adaptation solutions; 2) to better understand Natural Hazards, including the ones caused by Climate Change, but also others, related to different geo-phenomena (e.g., volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis) and; 3) to unravel new conceptual and technological solutions to impactfully contribute to the urgently required Energy Transition, from fossil fuels to renewable viable sources.
IDL is thus intrinsically concerned with the societal impact of the science it produces, recognizing the critical strategic importance of Earth System advanced research for present day human civilization given, namely, the dire challenges it already faces in view of the on-going anthropogenic Climate Change.
To successfully match such urgent demands, IDL champions a transversal, cross-disciplinary, Earth-System approach, cultivating strong international research collaborations with other top institutions and scientists, which grant a key all-encompassing vision of the complex scientific problems at stake. Such an approach is also supported by a three-fold methodology, with a strategic emphasis on data acquisition (field-work and geophysical data), laboratory analysis (geochemical and geophysical laboratory work) and numerical modelling (using a High-Performance Computing System - HPCS).
IDL is presently organized in four main research groups, reflecting different general disciplinary Earth Science backgrounds (climate and atmospheric science, marine science and coastal processes, solid Earth geology/geophysics and geo-resources& energy), contributing to 3 main research objectives or thematic lines (climate change, natural hazards and energy transition). IDL research community is based at University of Lisbon (Faculty of Sciences), benefiting from its administrative support and sharing a modern set of infrastructures also with its other partner institutions (e.g., Coimbra University, ISEL and UBI)
