Abstract

This project seeks to contribute to advancements in Western/European state theory from a socioanthropological and cultural perspective (Bourdieu 2014, Scott 2017, Steinmetz 1999, Graeber and Wengrow 2021). It proposes a subfield of state theory informed by recent critical turns - feminist, racial and postcolonial - and a collaborative method to establish research directions. The main goal of this proposal is to launch a 'critical studies of the state' interdisciplinary study group, which will serve as an anchoring platform for scholars to engage with the research topic, share insights, and collectively explore analytical and theoretical frameworks. The study group will produce original analysis and first-hand empirical material to ground and enrich its theoretical and analytical framework without neglecting the complexities evidenced by micro-social research. Building on recent critical literature, it will explore topics such as the governmentalization of the state (Butler 2004), slavery abolition and modern capitalism (Brass 1999), the moral construction of the category of ‘crime’ (Gilmore and Gilmore 2008), the moral dilemmas of imprisionment (Fassin et al. 2013), the colonial legacies of transnational fintech markets (Maurer 2015) and the role of special economic zones in state economies (Neveling 2015). The project proposes a collaborative process for the joint production of 4 scientific articles reflecting the study group’s findings, and for the production of a booklet for a non-academic audience. It proposes the discussion of results in 8 national/international conferences, as well as a final public seminar to share results with the wider public.
