Abstract

The scientific comprehension of nearshore sediment transport indicates that analyzing coastal processes on a regional scale can offer knowledge of the evolution of these areas. Sedimentary flows are among the most important but least documented processes associated with the lack of direct observations. Basic characteristics are unknown, and numerical modeling can fill this gap. The main objective of this project is to better identify the sediment processes that affect Madeira Island coastlines and how we can relate those processes to coastal change through a Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport (COAWST) Modeling System. COAWST modeling system requires extensive HPC resources (including MPI capabilities). We plan to conduct a series of simulations to test and validate the behavior of the sediment model and study different scenarios. We pretend to write at least one scientific article in the next 12 months.
