Abstract

Strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch) is an important crop for the fresh consumption but also ranking number one in the fruit processing industry. Recently, strawberry got the attention from the media being selected as the “dirtiest” fruits in the market. Considering the high competitiveness in sector and the European Union directives, growers and industry must constantly work towards the expectations of an increasingly demanding consumer, in terms of reducing fruit pesticides residues and environmental impact. The main objective of this PhD plan is to optimize strawberry quality (physicochemical, nutritional and sensorial) and productivity by testing environmentally friendly strategies, namely improved nutritional regimes (biostimulants, calcium and silicon) and cultivation systems (soil vs. soilless cultivation). At the same time, the impact of these strategies on microbiome will be explored. Finally, we will analyze the potential of multi and hyperspectral techniques for early detection of plant stress and fruit quality evaluation.
