Abstract

The food industry is one of the biggest producers of plastic, which is used to cover, coat and protect food, separating it from its surroundings and avoiding contamination and degradation. Considering the enormous burden and pressure that plastic waste has on the environment, new technologies must be implemented to reduce their impact. Polylactic acid is polymer produced from vegetable crops that is known to be an alternative to petroleum-based plastics. Thus, the main objective of this PhD proposal is to develop food grade plastic wrap made from PLA, using food residues as the source of lactic acid, to then incorporate natural food preserving extracts (plant volatiles and polyphenols) to the biofilm, allowing it to better preserve food. This technology will reduce the cost of producing PLA, while also reducing food waste. Finally, it will allow plastic food film to have active preserving properties, rather than just being a physical barrier.
