Abstract
Stroke-induced damage to the visual cortex causes peripheral and/or central visual loss (scotomas). Evidence of cortical reorganization in adults is still controversial, and biomarkers of plasticity are needed.
We will conduct a longitudinal study in ischemic stroke (N=25) with partial visual field loss to investigate its impact on the visual cortex and neuroplasticity while testing the monitoring role of functional and molecular imaging markers during subacute and chronic phases.
Our project, a collaboration between CIBIT/UC and ICNAS-Pharma, aims to assess neuroplasticity using an innovative fMRI-PET multimodal approach. We will perform population receptive field (pRF) mapping of the visual cortex using fMRI-based modelling and quantify synaptic density through [11C]-UCB-J PET (within/around the stroke region). Healthy controls (N=25) will be recruited to create reference pRF and synaptic density maps.
Insights gained from our research could provide valuable knowledge about neuroplasticity dynamic mechanisms in adults and validate biomarkers for guiding neurorehabilitation approaches.
